Fizzy Milk is the solo project of BROODS's Caleb Nott. He currently resides in Los Angeles, touring with BROODS, writing with an endless list of the a-list artists + producers, working on his tunes and generally cruisin' round as you do in LA. Connor caught up with him while briefly back in NZ.

Who is Fizzy Milk?
He's carbonated dairy product that would make you feel sick? ...It’s an outlet where I can share music that I like making and really that’s the only prerequisite for a Fizzy track is that I personally like it. The songs I make often don’t necessarily sound like the last one I made, or fit together in a cohesive way, and I really wanted to share those songs/beats that don’t fit into other projects I work on. Im not saying I like these tracks less or anything they just have their own space and I really wanted to create a platform to release them. Hence Fizzy Milk.

What do you get out of music?
I like making things whether it’s noises or physical objects. I like being able to show people my work at the end of the day. But I like making music the most because it’s the most forgiving. You can make changes and fix mistakes that you can’t when making furniture for example, that’s why some people take years and years to finish a work of songs and it can totally take over your heart and brain and drive you insane in the process. A song is never finished but all we can do is try and get close. To actually answer the question though what I get out of music is an incomparable satisfaction and pleasure that nothing else in my life has given me so naturally I said fuck everything else I’ll make music thanks!

My favourite writing session was every session I had when I went to Nicaragua for a week with a bunch of mates and just made songs in jungle huts with the monkeys! And they were probably the buzziest sessions too

When do you know you've smoked too much?
Pretty much when you think to yourself I’ve smoked to much... I said this to myself a lot in the last year. I thought it was a necessary component to myself being creative and productive in the studio when really I was just spending 3 times as long in there. Don’t get wrong a bit of ganja every now and then is bloody bliss just not 10 jays a day haha.

Where is the best meal you've ever eaten from?
Probably the hardest question so far... There is this sandwich shop on the out skirts of the French quarter in New Orleans which is literally a hole in the wall at the back of a dairy. They have this insane shrimp poboy there that is the yummiest and messiest sammy you’ll maybe ever have! My FOH engineer Fabian showed me this joint and we go there every time we go through New Orleans.

How much do you love LA?
I have a love/hate relationship with this place, it can be the most exciting and friendly place to be but also the most isolated and lonely place too. There is so much shit happening here that if you stop being part of all of it you can easily float out to sea and get severely lost. The key to living here is to have close friends that are super honest because there are a lot of “Professional Friends” here that feed off hype and as soon as you are not in the lime light they disappear like magic!

Why do you still live there?
Opportunity. That’s it. This place is a shit hole.
