Music & People
Maxwell Young is a producer residing in Wellington, New Zealand currently working on his debut album. With a cult-like following Maxwell is set to become New Zealand’s bedroom producing heartthrob. I had a talk to Maxwell - What when who why and how is he?
What are your goals for 2018?
I'm getting ready to release my debut album with accompanying videos and merch. It's a bedroom album meaning that it's pretty much made by myself on my laptop in my bedroom or at cafe's but I'm trying to subvert some sonic expectations the genre holds. Right now bedroom pop mostly derives from Mac Demarco or King Krule etc. which is fine and there's some real talent in these people but the sound is so oversaturated. The sound I'm going for is closer to bands like The 1975 or Phoenix. I'd love to be included in that conversation more to redefine tropes etc. I'd also like to visit LA to meet my talented friends over there and potentially work with some.
When are you feeling most creative?
I feel my most creative when stimulated by work and interviews from my heroes. Life does inspire a lot and the majority of my songs begin from vignettes from my life, however I often find that when I force a song to be about something that just happened it usually feels contrived. When that process doesn't feel contrived it's going to be a really good song.
Where is the best food in wellington?
The best food in Wellington is either the Pills Rob Burger at Ekim, or the Pork Noodle Bowl with sauce 3 at Lo Mein.
Why have you stayed in Wellington?
I've stayed in Wellington so far because I haven't felt quite ready to actually put myself out there and wanted to focus on developing my sound and to give myself a bit of time to grow up after graduating high school. I was hesitant at first to stay here this long even though I'm just 18 but I'm really glad I have for now. The future's very up in the air.
How do you have your coffee?
Americano's because I feel sophisticated when I order them.
